Background
The Heart of the Obscure is a mysterious magical artifact featured in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, used by the player throughout the story to interact with and seal rifts.
This project translated the recognizable in-game artifact into an official collectible enamel pin, preserving its distinctive shape, magical purple center, and intricate decorative details in a small-scale metal product.
Challenge
The main challenge was achieving the sparkling, star-like effect in the purple center while keeping the surface clean and visually consistent.
A standard enamel fill could reproduce the purple color, but it could not create the depth and shimmer of the original artwork. The glitter also needed to be distributed evenly across the small area. Too little would make the effect almost invisible, while too much could overwhelm the purple background and interfere with the fine white graphic printed on top.
What I did
I worked with the factory to test the glitter concentration and its distribution within the purple area, comparing different samples to find the right balance between the base color and the sparkling effect.
I also checked how the glitter interacted with the fine white starburst graphic, making sure the decorative effect enhanced the background without reducing the clarity of the artwork.
Through sampling and adjustment, I established a workable process that could reproduce the intended deep-purple, starry appearance consistently.
Outcome
This project gave me practical experience with glitter enamel and decorative particle effects on small metal products.
More importantly, I learned how to control the relationship between glitter density, base color, and printed details, giving me another proven finishing technique that I can apply to future pins, badges, and other collectible products.
