Background
Dead Space is a sci-fi survival horror game developed by Motive Studios and released in 2023. At the center of its story is the mysterious Black Marker, an alien artifact believed to hold the secrets of human evolution and eternal life. This project recreates the Black Marker as a 10-inch Polyresin LED statue, capturing its distinctive double-helix form, alien markings, and eerie glow. Limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, it was designed as a collectible that brings one of Dead Space’s most iconic artifacts into the physical world.
Challenge
The main challenge was balancing light distribution and internal stability. Because the light source was hidden inside the resin sculpture, the LEDs needed to illuminate the intended areas evenly without creating visible hot spots or unwanted bright areas. At the same time, the light strip had to be securely fixed inside the hollow structure. Any movement during handling or transportation could cause the strip to shift, creating unwanted noise or even affecting the lighting effect.
What I did
I worked closely with the factory to test different LED configurations and spacing. We tested the distance between individual LEDs and determined when to use larger or smaller LEDs in different areas. This allowed us to concentrate more light where it was needed while keeping other areas darker, creating a more controlled and even lighting effect.
To prevent the LED strip from moving or rattling inside the resin body, I tested multiple adhesives against both the strip material and the resin surface. I ultimately selected a flexible RTV silicone adhesive that provided sufficient adhesion while also absorbing vibration and movement. This helped keep the light strip firmly in place without introducing unnecessary stress to the components.
Outcome
This project demonstrated our ability to work with light and resin as an integrated engineering and manufacturing challenge. Through the development and testing process, we proved that we could effectively control light distribution within a resin structure and achieve the intended visual effect.
The product was also highly valued by Dead Space fans, with strong demand on the secondary market and resale prices significantly above its original retail price. For collectors who love the IP, it became a particularly sought-after piece.
